GORDON BROWN

Listeners to classical music in San Diego may recognize the voice of Gordon Brown, who has been involved in classical-music radio in one form or another for over twenty years. Mentored by Kingsley McLaren, Gordon joined the staff of KFSD-FM 94.1 in 1986, where he announced regularly until the station's demise in January 1997. In 1998 Gordon secured a position with the Astor Broadcast Group, which maintained the classical stations KFSD-FM 92.1 and KFSD-AM 1450 in San Diego's North County until February 2007.

During that time Gordon produced and hosted, or co-hosted, three programs, including Fridays Live at the Museum with Wes Brustad. For several seasons Gordon also produced and co-hosted the San Diego Chamber Orchestra Radio Program with the Orchestra's Artistic Director and Conductor Donald Barra. In 1998 Gordon proposed to the Astor staff that they consider a live program of classical listener requests. The suggestion germinated, and Listener Request Friday, which Gordon produced and hosted weekly, became a staple of KFSD's programming for over eight years. Gordon continues to work for the Astor Broadcast Group, where he writes and produces public-service announcements and maintains the Group's websites.

Gordon's professional interests have not been limited to radio broadcasting. A native Californian, Gordon had worked in the geotechnical industry from 1973 to 1981, when he decided to pursue one of his first loves, the study of philosophy. He was employed as an Adjunct Professor of Philosophy at Grossmont Community College in El Cajon, California from 1988 until 2005, where he taught courses in symbolic logic, critical thinking, and introductory philosophy.

Gordon's interests outside of classical music and broadcasting are almost too varied and wide-ranging to be recounted here. His hobbies include computer programming, website design and development, reading and writing philosophy, studying mathematics and symbolic logic, and collecting classical-music and jazz recordings. He is also a committed vegetarian who occasionally contributes his efforts to a handful of animal-rights groups in California and Michigan. When he really needs to unwind, Gordon rides his bike for 80 to 90 miles each week, and goes contradancing regularly.

Gordon says, "I consider it a privilege to have been asked by XLNC1 to come on board. From the start I could sense their passion for, and deep commitment to, the survival and flourishing of classical music, in San Diego and everywhere else. XLNC1's standards of professionalism in programming and production are also without peer. For me, coming to XLNC1 feels like 'coming home'!"
